What you will be able to do
- Place any observed symptom on the correct OSI layer and name the header field that proves it - MAC address, IP TTL, TCP flags or an HTTP status line.
- Subnet an IPv4 block by hand: convert /26, /27 and /30 masks into usable host ranges, plan VLSM address space for a four-site office, and spot overlapping ranges before deployment.
- Read a routing table on Linux and on a vendor-style CLI, explain longest-prefix match and administrative distance, and add a static route plus default gateway that survives a reboot.
- Trace a DNS query end to end - stub resolver, recursive resolver, root, TLD, authoritative - and use dig +trace, dig @server and SOA/NS records to prove where a stale answer comes from.
- Capture traffic with tcpdump filters (host, port, tcp[tcpflags]) and analyse it in Wireshark: follow a TCP stream, identify retransmissions, and measure handshake and TLS setup latency.
- Diagnose the recurring failure set: duplex mismatch, wrong VLAN, MTU and fragmentation problems, ARP conflicts, asymmetric return paths, and a firewall dropping SYN silently.
- Document an unfamiliar network - L2/L3 diagram, address plan, DHCP scopes and DNS zones - in a form another engineer can act on without asking you questions.
